How to Create Discord Server Rules

Good Discord server rules don't need to be twenty pages long. They need to tell people what the community expects and give moderators a consistent foundation for dealing with problems.

Start With the Culture

Before writing rules, decide what kind of community you're trying to build.

Rules should protect that culture rather than simply copy a generic list from another server.

Cover the Essentials

Most communities need rules covering respectful behavior, harassment, spam, inappropriate content, privacy, moderation and platform-wide requirements.

The exact list should reflect your community.

Write Rules People Will Actually Read

Use short sections, clear language and examples when necessary. If a rule requires three paragraphs to understand, rewrite it.

Explain the Reason When It Helps

Some rules make more sense when members understand why they exist. A short explanation can turn a rule from an arbitrary restriction into a community expectation.

Leave Room for Judgment

Not every possible situation can be predicted. Give moderators enough discretion to deal with unusual situations while still requiring consistency.

Review Rules Periodically

Communities change. Rules that made sense when a server had twenty members may need adjustment when it has hundreds.

Review the rules occasionally and remove anything that no longer serves a purpose.
