How to Moderate a Discord Server

Moderating a Discord server is about much more than removing people when something goes wrong.

Good moderation is mostly about creating an environment where people understand the expectations and can enjoy participating.

Start With Clear Rules

Members cannot follow rules they cannot understand. Keep the important rules visible and write them in plain language.

Avoid creating a giant rulebook for situations that almost never happen.

Moderation Should Be Consistent

If one member is disciplined for something while another member is ignored for doing the same thing, trust disappears quickly.

Consistency doesn't mean every situation receives an identical response. It means similar situations are handled according to the same principles.

Choose Staff Carefully

Moderators should be responsible, patient and capable of communicating with people. Technical knowledge is useful, but judgment is more important.
